Why Do Disc Drives Need Refurbishing?

After years of use, PS4 disc drives can start to not work as well, usually due to dirty or other foreign substances getting in them. They might also need refurbishing because of being used improperly such as two discs being inserted at the same time. Additionally, sometimes internal components such as the laser or any of the various gears or levers might stop working correctly.

Can I Clean My PS4 Disc Drive Myself?

That depends. If you have a good level of comfort with cleaning your PS4 console in general, you might be able to clean the disc drive as well. However, if you don't feel comfortable working on your console yourself you may be better of finding someone to help you.
