Discord Server Moderator Expectations

Thank you for being a moderator for our TronicsFix Discord server (https://discord.gg/tronicsfix). We appreciate your contribution to our community and your support of our goal to share with people that repair matters.

As a moderator for the TronicsFix Discord Server (referred to as "the server" throughout this document), your expectations are as follows:

  • Moderate the server in coordination with TronicsFix staff and in accordance with our server rules
  • Maintain activity within the server
  • Answer questions from users or escalate to staff as needed
  • Help users onboard and navigate the server (add roles, find channels, adjust server view, etc.)
  • Contact another moderator or TronicsFix staff if you are unable to resolve an issue yourself or you need assistance
  • Use appropriate actions for users who violate our server rules (elaborated lower in the document)
  • Delete posts that are in violation of our server rules
  • Set an example by following the rules yourself

Additionally, if you have suggestions for improvements or new possibilities for the server, please let us know.

Volunteer Disclosure

You are not employed by TronicsFix and your participation time is entirely voluntary.

Your hours are flexible and determined only by you. We will never ask you to moderate during specific times or days, and there will never be a formal schedule for moderator participation (except for just maintaining regular activity on the server).

We will not set a minimum number of hours required to remain a volunteer moderator.

Volunteers can opt into or out of the program at any time and for any reason.

The TronicsFix team can remove your volunteer moderation permissions at any time and for any reason.

Prohibited Moderator Actions

Do not post content, malware, or anything that may be related to piracy, cheating, exploiting, or anything deemed illegal by US law.

Do not use profanity, even if it is mild. As a volunteer moderator, your conduct will be judged higher than the typical community member, so it is important to keep your chat clean.

Do not discuss moderation issues or decisions publicly. Moderation discussions, debates, and questions should be discussed in the #moderator-only channel. Do not get into back-and-forth chat with users about moderation decisions in the public channels.

Do not reveal private information about yourself or others “doxxing” in the server.

Do not pose or pretend to be an official member of the TronicsFix team. We love that you have agreed to volunteer, but it is not appropriate to consider yourself, or present yourself as a formal employee of TronicsFix.

Moderation Guidelines

These are very general guidelines we follow when determining when to take moderation actions against a user. If you aren’t sure whether to take action, then just reach out to the moderator team or to someone on the TronicsFix team. We won’t always get it right, we just expect that you do your best.

When you should “timeout” someone (temporarily limits users interactions): We use the timeout feature when a user is posting about the following (if the user is just mentioning something about these topics in passing there’s no need for action but if their post is focused on these topics that’s when we take action):

  • Religion
  • Politics
  • Posting excessively or just being annoying
  • Making disrespectful posts about people or businesses

When you should “kick” someone (removes user from the server but they can rejoin if they have an invite link):

  • Repeated violations of the rules

When you should “ban” someone (removes user from the server permanently): There are several types of posts that call for an immediate ban. These include:

  • Racism
  • Sexual harassment
  • Posting or linking to pornographic content
  • Bullying
  • Hate speech
  • Scam messages (offering a service, listing a phone number, posting the scam in multiple channels, etc.)

An example of how to moderate when someone is spamming

  1. Warn the user in whatever channel they’re using that they are spamming, which is against our server rules.
  2. If they continue to spam after being warned, time out the user.
  3. If they rejoin the server and continue to spam, kick them from the server along with a final warning.
  4. If they rejoin the server and still continue to spam, you are entitled to ban them from the server. Make sure to list the reason for their ban (“spamming with multiple warnings”). The ban message will be posted in the moderator-only chat for us to see.
